Ever stopped to think about the background process that results in horses appearing as runners in a race? Let me take you behind the scenes.

The race programme is used by trainers and owners to identify suitable races for their horse. Most races have some limit(s), be they age, ability, sex of the horse, whether it has won before etc. You can only enter the race if you meet all the criteria and if you do, then you will want a race distance and course that you think suits your horse.

You enter your chosen race by paying an entry fee and registering to run. Entries normally close at noon 5 days before the race and are published later that afternoon. If there are more entries then the maximum that would be allowed to run, then an elimination sequence is set to decide who gets priority.

A final decision is made at "declaration" at 10am either 24, 48 or 72 hours ahead of the race. If you still wish to run, then you declare and assuming that you are not eliminated by the race being oversubscribed, you can book a jockey and you will see your horse named on the race card!

Our horse, Silver Imperial, will be entered tomorrow to run at Kempton next Tuesday. 🤞 that she get a good spot in the elimination and that racing gets the go-ahead!
