Weekly Update 17-10-19

By On 17th October 2019

Another disappointing run from The Way You Dance, this time yesterday at Bath.  It will be the last time I type that though as we have decided to retire him and find him a nice home and more details of that are below.

Fr Humphrey will hopefully be good to go to Kempton this weekend.  He did give himself a bang earlier in the week, but Neil seemed pretty confident yesterday that he would be fine to run on Sunday.

I am busy with renewal pricing for all the horses, including sorting out new options.

The Way You Dance

I had a conversation with Michael last week about The Way You Dance and after discussion, we decided to consider not selling The Way You Dance but instead look to retire him.  The Way You Dance is a lovely horse in nature and he is giving obvious indications that he is not enjoying racing at his current level, to the extent that he is largely refusing to do so.  We agreed to run once more at Bath in the hope that a lower grade race would spark some enthusiasm.  Without that though, we agreed that it would be best not to sell him on to someone that will want to continue to race him.  This is not so much about the racing itself as TWYD has shown that he will look after himself in that respect, it is more about our lack of control of his future when his subsequent owner realises that TWYD is not going to serve them well as a racehorse.

With that advice, I contacted shareholders to suggest that we consider retiring him if there was no improvement at Bath and all the feedback that I received was supportive of this action.  We, therefore, headed to Bath yesterday more in hope than expectation but we had an enjoyable afternoon.

After a decent passage through the race, TWYD was looking to be going well and swept round the outside into 3rd halfway around the last bend, but within a few strides, it became clear that he was dropping back and he was allowed to come home in his own time.

That leaves us having tried everything with him this season and it is time to accept the situation and move on and if we can take control of his retirement to ensure he gets a good home, then that is preferable to leaving that in the hands of someone else.  Michael is contacting a couple of people who have expressed an interest in him and I will arrange for him to be rehomed.

Fr Humphrey

Fr Humphrey is entered to run at Kempton on Sunday and our race is currently due to run at 5pm.  There are 15 entries and whilst Fr Humphrey gave himself a bang earlier in the week, Neil seemed confident that he would be fine for the race.  When I saw him yesterday, he was being clipped, the horse equivalent of a “haircut”, so he should look his best on Sunday!  Declarations for Kempton are made tomorrow.

Neil is still trying to get hold of the guy in Ireland who owns Fr Humphrey to get his agreement to our plan to keep him for the winter.

My Brother

We called in at Neil’s to see My Brother yesterday and he is looking well if a bit tubby!  He is doing daily exercise on the horse walker and he seems well and happy.  I will work with Neil to set renewal fees and share prices for November 2020 to October 2021.

Anjaal / Silver Miss Filly

As reported last time, we have decided to lease a lovely looking filly out of Anjaal whose first two-year-olds have raced this year and they have been pretty successful.  She is with Michael Attwater and we will race her for her three-year-old season.  She is a genuine flat horse and will ensure that we still have a horse in training with Michael once The Way You Dance is retired.  I have calculated share prices for her and will be selling 5% shares for £1,100 and 10% for £2,000.  That is less than £100 per month to own 5% of a racehorse and if you would like more information or express your interest, please let me know.

I went to Michael’s to her last week and she looks a nice individual.  She is now out cantering on the Downs and is coming on well.

From The Stables

On Monday 8th, Pannia and Peltwell ran OK for Neil Mulholland but both were unplaced.  There was nothing the following day and on Wednesday, Neil had Seven Clans and Simply Sin unplaced at Kempton and Magical Thomas and The Twisler unplaced at Wincanton.  Viking Ruby fared best of Neil’s five, finishing 2nd at Wincanton.

Thursday saw more runners for Neil with Chirico Vallis unplaced, but The Detainee made the places in 3rd.  Vexillum was his third runner, but this one was also unplaced.  Johnny Farrelly also had three runners the same day.  Ali The Hunter was well beaten, as was Scaramucci but sandwiched between them was Chance It who won and delivered Johnny his first winner in a long time.  Michael Attwater’s two both failed to place with Music Major beaten at Kempton and Daniel Dravot also unplaced at Southwell.

On Friday, Prettylittlething did not manage to make the frame for Neil and neither did Johnnys runner Gastara at Chepstow on Saturday before a blank Sunday and Monday.

Tuesday was a good day, as whilst Hidden Depths failed to make the frame for Neil at Hereford, his other two runners at the track both won with Runasimi River winning and then Milkwood following up half an hour later.  For Michael, Urtzi was unplaced, but Passing Clouds finished 3rd at a decent price.

There was not much doing for our yards yesterday though as Bambys Boy for Neil and The Way You Dance for BG Racing and Michael were both unplaced and Neil’s other runners Erika and Justforthecraic were well beaten, as was Simon Earle’s Sixth of June at Kempton.

Getting Involved

Fees for horses are all-inclusive and buying a share in a BG Racing horse is a decision that you will not regret.  Quoted prices include the purchase price of the horse where applicable and in such circumstances, should you decide to renew for a second year, you will only need to pay training fees which are around £200 per 1% share.  If you are interested in finding out more about what is involved, then please do get in touch as I would be delighted to discuss things with you.

I issue weekly shareholder updates (which go into more detail than the blog) and frequent updates on social media.  Feel free to like the FaceBook page and follow the Twitter updates.

I also have an e-book entitled “Racehorse Ownership – Everything You Might Have Wanted To Know But Would Not Have Known Who To Ask“.  This is free and the download page can be accessed here.

Have a great week.

Phil
