Weekly Update 21-05-18

By On 21st May 2018

Less than a week since the last update, so how can so much have happened?  There have been decisions over running plans for both The Way You Dance and My Brother which have required a lot of time on the phone to Neil this week and I also needed to manage the aftermath of our first runner of the season which was a really nice run for The Way You Dance who finished 2nd at Chepstow on Tuesday.

The Way You Dance

It was an encouraging start to the year for The Way You Dance finishing 2nd and well clear of the third at Chepstow.  I recorded a post race video from the course which you can view from the Facebook page here:  Click to View.  There is also a pre-race video on Facebook which you might also be interested in.

The Way You Dance was only beaten by the combination of a very well handicapped rival and perhaps by being just a little short of race fitness.  Silvestre De Souza rode him well and did not give him a hard time when he realised the win was not achievable but TWYD beat the third by 9 lengths so he is obviously in pretty good form.  Silvestre said he stayed the trip just fine and would also be OK at 1 mile 6 furlongs if we wanted to drop him back a couple of furlongs.

We had more good news on Wednesday morning when Neil reported that TWYD was “the best he has ever been” the day after a race.  Last season he was returning from races sore and needing some time off to get back to exercise but whatever was causing that did not affect him this time.

Since Chepstow we have been looking at opportunities to get The Way You Dance back racing on his current handicap mark which will be reassessed on Tuesday.  TWYD is rated 59 and we can expect him to go up several pounds, so there was an incentive to get an entry in before then so we can run again of the mark of 59.  Two entries were made, at Nottingham on Tuesday and Yarmouth on Wednesday, but  given that the soreness that we had with TWYD all last summer probably arose from jarring, we are reluctant to send him out on really fast ground especially on the flat where a good to firm description is much faster than a similar description over jumps.  Both Nottingham and Yarmouth are listed as good to firm and are watering to maintain that and whilst it would probably be OK, we have a long summer ahead and we have decided to skip both engagements.

There is an ideal race at Lingfield next week (29th) if we get some rain before then and several other possible options in the days that follow.

I will upload a race diary as soon as I can to the website and I will now need to recalculate the share price for the remainder of the year which I will update on the website.  In the meantime, please contact me if you would like to get involved.

Justice Super

I did not manage to get down to see Johnny this week, but I am still hoping do so so in the coming days.  I did speak to him yesterday and he reported that Justice seems pretty happy and is not in pain.  He has been turned out in one of the paddocks.

My Brother

We are not getting much luck with the ground for My Brother either.  We have entered a race at Lingfield this coming Thursday 24th May and at Pontefract on Friday 25th.  Neither are giving much encouragement through their weather forecasts and ground updates though as both are reporting good to firm ground with little chance of sufficient rain to soften conditions.  We are really reluctant to start My Brother off on fast ground and as a result of this Neil has started to school him over hurdles at home.

He had his first session earlier this week and Neil reported that he was really happy with the way that he jumped.  We will keep an eye on the races later in the week and decide from there.  There are some other possible run dates under consideration and the most likely options will be hurdle races at Southwell on the 5th and 12th June.  Neil is scheduling further schooling for My Brother, so we can go down this route if we do not get any better ground on the flat.

Shares are £450 for 1%, but I will discount these to £430 per 1% for 5% purchase and £410 per 1% for 10% purchases.  I am also happy to take instalment payments.  This is an all in cost to 31st October 2018 and at renewal shares will be less than £200 per 1% share to cover training fees should you decide to stay involved for another year.  I am really looking forward to seeing what My Brother can achieve on the racecourse this summer, so if you or anyone you know might be interested in taking a shareholding, please contact me for more information.

From The Stables

It was a quiet week for our stables.  Neil had a second with The Way You Dance on Tuesday though!  He also has a winner the same day through Happy Escape, but The Detainee was beaten.  Also on Tuesday, Johnny had a winner with Lilliput Lane.  There was only one runner on Wednesday and that was Sporting Boy for Johnny who was well beaten.  It was a similar story on Friday when Johnny had two runners, Ali The Hunter and Mr Lando who were both beaten and after no runners on Friday, Johnny’s Sehalyi and Neil’s Magical Thomas were both unplaced on Saturday.  The week concluded with Neil’s three Stratford runners failing to get the job done on Sunday.  Fingerontheswitch was best of them but only 3rd.  Stealing Mix and Boy in a Bentley did not contend.

Thinking of Joining Us?

All quoted prices include the purchase price of the horse and should you decide to renew for a second year, you will only need to pay training fees which are under £200 per 1% share.  If you are interested in discussing what is involved, then please do get in touch as I would be delighted to discuss things with you.  I also have an e-book entitled “Racehorse Ownership – Everything You Might Have Wanted To Know But Would Not Have Known Who To Ask“.  This is free and the download page can be accessed by following this link:

Have a great week.
